Sensory rooms and multisensory equipment for social care facilities, including;
A social care environment can be an overwhelming place for the senses, and this is even more true for people who are living there and may feel like they have no escape from the intensity of their home. Sensory rooms are designed specifically for your needs to give a safe space for anyone who needs it. The rooms are designed with sensory equipment that will stimulate the senses in a calm, controlled way and will help to reduce stress in those who may suffer from emotional or sensory overload.
In 2017 it was found that nearly 3 in 10 prisoners have some form of learning difficulties or special needs. The environment in prison is overwhelming for people who do not suffer from sensory overloading, so it can be a very difficult place for those who do. There is not a lot of care put in place for those who need it in prison, so sensory rooms are a helpful addition to prison environments. Multi sensory rooms filled with sensory equipment allow prisoners to go to calm down and relax their senses if they need to. Sensory rooms can also be helpful as a safe space to hold therapy classes, away from the intense surroundings of everyday prison life.
There are a number of charities and organisations that can help fund sensory rooms; in homes, schools, and community centres. For information on grants and funding for sensory rooms & equipment read our guide here.
